How to fish Natures Lake through the year
Walleye
- Spring
- Walleye are shallow, on and just off the spawning flats and the first green weeds.
- Early summer
- Walleye are setting up on the outside weed edge, points and shallow structure.
- Summer
- Walleye are working the weed edge, points and any wind-blown structure. With 100% of this lake 15 ft or shallower, the weed edge is the main event.
- Fall
- Walleye are packing onto the sharpest breaks and points as the water cools, in big schools with short windows. A 6-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.
Northern pike
- Spring
- Pike are in the shallow bays and along new weed growth.
- Early summer
- Pike are on the outside weed edge and points.
- Summer
- Pike are on the deep weed edge and points near the coolest water they can find. With 100% of this lake 15 ft or shallower, the weed edge is the main event.
- Fall
- Pike are on the last green weeds and the breaks beside them, feeding heavily as the water drops. A 6-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.

MN DNR · in their words
From the 1990 survey
fish species composition of lake is dominated by l ow oxygen tolerant species: bullheads, yellow per ch & northern. Northern pike gillnet abundance is 16.5 per lift. A wide range of sizes were sample d, with age i-vii represented. Growth is good, me an length at last annulus formation for age 1 = 9. 5 = 22.1 (n=1). Bullheads are abundant, with blacks, yell ows, and browns present in the lake. The yellow a nd brown bullhead population is comprised of large fish and would be of interest to commercial fishe rmen. Walleye abundance is low at 2.0/gillnet. W alleye probably move throughout the popple river s ystem from round lake to big fork river during spr ing spawning and exit squaw lake throughout the summer. A limited sample indicates that growth is good.
