2007Rates come from standard DNR survey gear (gill nets, trap nets, electrofishing), judged against statewide benchmarks for the same gear, so the same number of fish per net can read differently for two species. Where the standard gear can't count a species reliably, only presence and size are listed. Typical is the middle fish of those measured. Open a row for the full length spread, survey by survey.
How to fish Hungry Lake through the year
Northern pike
- Spring
- Pike are in the shallow bays and along new weed growth. At 11.4 ft of clarity, fish them deeper and lighter than usual.
- Early summer
- Pike are on the outside weed edge and points.
- Summer
- Pike are on the deep weed edge and points near the coolest water they can find. On a lake that drops to 60 ft, check the deep edge of that structure too.
- Fall
- Pike are on the last green weeds and the breaks beside them, feeding heavily as the water drops.
Walleye
- Spring
- Walleye are shallow, on and just off the spawning flats and the first green weeds. At 11.4 ft of clarity, fish them deeper and lighter than usual.
- Early summer
- Walleye are setting up on the outside weed edge, points and shallow structure.
- Summer
- Walleye are working the weed edge, points and any wind-blown structure. On a lake that drops to 60 ft, check the deep edge of that structure too.
- Fall
- Walleye are packing onto the sharpest breaks and points as the water cools, in big schools with short windows.

From the 2025 survey
Hungry Lake is a 240-acre, class 29 lake located in south central Becker County. It remains relatively undeveloped with approximately eight homes or cabins along its shoreline based on 2024 satellite imagery. A standard fisheries survey was completed in June 2025 to assess the fish populations in Hungry Lake.
Anglers will find a moderately abundant number of Northern Pike in Hungry Lake and these fish were good sized compared to other lakes in the Detroit Lakes work area. The catch rate of 14.7 Northern Pike per net in the 2025 survey was higher than the lake average. The average size of the pike captured was 24.5 inches and the longest was 30 inches. About 65% of the pike were longer than 24 inches. Walleye numbers continue to be very low at the lake with only two Walleyes sampled, however these fish averaged 25 inches. Bluegill numbers were high for the lake but most of the fish were small. Only a handful of fish over eight inches were caught and 72% of the fish were less than seven inches. The longest Bluegill measured was just below nine inches. Black Crappie and Largemouth Bass were captured in low numbers in the trap nets, which is often the case with this sampling gear. Black Crappie up to 10.5 inches were measured and Largemouth Bass up to 19 inches were captured. Other fish species sampled were Brown and Yellow Bullhead, Golden Shiner, hybrid sunfish, Pumpkinseed, and Yellow Perch.
