Rates come from standard DNR survey gear (gill nets, trap nets, electrofishing), judged against statewide benchmarks for the same gear, so the same number of fish per net can read differently for two species. Where the standard gear can't count a species reliably, only presence and size are listed. Typical is the middle fish of those measured. Open a row for the full length spread, survey by survey.

How to fish Big Stone Lake through the year

Walleye

Spring
Walleye are shallow, on and just off the spawning flats and the first green weeds.
Early summer
Walleye are setting up on the outside weed edge, points and shallow structure.
Summer
Walleye are working the weed edge, points and any wind-blown structure.
Fall
Walleye are packing onto the sharpest breaks and points as the water cools, in big schools with short windows. A 16-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.

Largemouth bass

Spring
Largemouth are moving up into the warming bays and flats, staging around wood, docks and new weeds to spawn.
Early summer
Largemouth are on the shallow spawning flats and protected bays, where beds go on firm bottom next to isolated cover.
Summer
Largemouth are in and along the weeds: cabbage and milfoil edges, matted cover and shade.
Fall
Largemouth are chasing bait back onto the flats and into the remaining green weeds, feeding hard and shallow before the freeze. A 16-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.

MN DNR · in their words

From the 2025 survey

Lake sturgeon were historically present in Big Stone Lake but had been extirpated by around 1950 likely due to winterkill, summerkill, overharvest and barriers to spawning migrations. Lake sturgeon were reintroduced in 2014 and approximately 4,000 fingerlings had been stocked annually (excluding 2020), totaling 44,500 as of 2024. Stocking will occur every third year thereafter, with the next scheduled in 2027.

This targeted survey was conducted to document the size distribution and relative abundance of lake sturgeon in Big Stone Lake. Large-mesh gill nets were used to specifically target large fish. Over a three day period during October 2025, 137 lake sturgeon were caught. Their lengths ranged from 36 to 58 inches. Thirty-four percent were 50 inches or larger. The largest sturgeon measured 58 inches and 64 pounds and was 11 years old. Stocking has been successful as sturgeon are abundant, growing fast, are in good physical condition and are frequently caught by anglers and in DNR surveys.

This was a specific assessment targeting lake sturgeon so these data are not comparable to data from standard gill nets used to sample all species that are reported in other Big Stone Lake reports.
