Rates come from standard DNR survey gear (gill nets, trap nets, electrofishing), judged against statewide benchmarks for the same gear, so the same number of fish per net can read differently for two species. Where the standard gear can't count a species reliably, only presence and size are listed. Typical is the middle fish of those measured. Open a row for the full length spread, survey by survey.
How to fish Big Dick Lake through the year
Largemouth bass
- Spring
- Largemouth are moving up into the warming bays and flats, staging around wood, docks and new weeds to spawn. At 10.5 ft of clarity, fish them deeper and lighter than usual.
- Early summer
- Largemouth are on the shallow spawning flats and protected bays, where beds go on firm bottom next to isolated cover.
- Summer
- Largemouth are in and along the weeds: cabbage and milfoil edges, matted cover and shade.
- Fall
- Largemouth are chasing bait back onto the flats and into the remaining green weeds, feeding hard and shallow before the freeze.
Northern pike
- Spring
- Pike are in the shallow bays and along new weed growth. At 10.5 ft of clarity, fish them deeper and lighter than usual.
- Early summer
- Pike are on the outside weed edge and points.
- Summer
- Pike are on the deep weed edge and points near the coolest water they can find.
- Fall
- Pike are on the last green weeds and the breaks beside them, feeding heavily as the water drops.

The gill net catch rate for black crappie was above the expected range, similar to the previous assessment. Black crappie were sampled in trap nets at a rate within the lake class expected range. Size structure appears good indicating a quality fishery exists. Lengths ranged from 4.4-12.4 inches with an average length of 8.6 inches in the gill net sample. Growth was slow early, but was near the statewide average by age 3. Black crappie averaged over 10 inches by age 6.
Largemouth bass were sampled at a rate exceeding the lake class expected range, while the trap net catch rate was within the expected range. Size structure appears moderate with a gill net average length of almost 14 inches. Lengths ranged from 9.6-18.9 inches.
Bluegill were the most abundant fish sampled in trap nets, exceeding the expected range. Size structure was poor, dominated by fish less than eight inches (98%). Lengths ranged from 3.5-8.4 inches with an average length of 6.9 inches. Growth was similar to the average for lake class 29.
Yellow perch were the most abundant fish sampled in gill nets, within the expected range. Size structure was poor with the longest fish sampled being 9.5 inches. Of the 96 perch sampled in gill nets, 95% were less than eight inches, and of little interest to anglers.
