Rates come from standard DNR survey gear (gill nets, trap nets, electrofishing), judged against statewide benchmarks for the same gear, so the same number of fish per net can read differently for two species. Where the standard gear can't count a species reliably, only presence and size are listed. Typical is the middle fish of those measured. Open a row for the full length spread, survey by survey.
How to fish Rock Lake through the year
Walleye
- Spring
- Walleye are shallow, on and just off the spawning flats and the first green weeds. In 2.5 ft of visibility, they sit shallower than you think.
- Early summer
- Walleye are setting up on the outside weed edge, points and shallow structure.
- Summer
- Walleye are working the weed edge, points and any wind-blown structure. With 100% of this lake 15 ft or shallower, the weed edge is the main event.
- Fall
- Walleye are packing onto the sharpest breaks and points as the water cools, in big schools with short windows. A 7.9-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.
Yellow perch
- Spring
- Perch are draping eggs over flooded cover and weed stems on the shallow flats. In 2.5 ft of visibility, they sit shallower than you think.
- Early summer
- Perch are spread over sand-grass flats and the first weed edges in loose packs.
- Summer
- Perch are over deeper soft-bottom flats and the basin, on the bottom and in schools. With 100% of this lake 15 ft or shallower, the weed edge is the main event.
- Fall
- Perch are roaming the mid-depth flats in loose schools, chasing young-of-year bait while it is still shallow. A 7.9-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.

MN DNR · in their words
From the 2025 survey
Rock Lake is a 439-acre, class 43 lake, located approximately 3 miles south of the City of Russell in Lyon County. Rock Lake is managed primarily for Walleye and secondarily for Yellow Perch. Lower Mississippi Strain Walleye were stocked in Rock Lake in 2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2024. Walleye were not stocked in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so Walleye were stocked in 2021 despite being an "off" year. A Walleye fry stocking evaluation using daytime electrofishing was conducted on September 11, 2025 to determine if natural reproduction of Walleye occurred during a non-stocked year in Rock Lake.
Young-of-the-year (YOY) Walleye were captured at a rate of 132.0 per hour, which indicates that natural reproduction occurred in Rock Lake. Walleye fingerlings were 5.2 to 7. inches in length and averaged 5.4 inches. Assuming survival to Spring of 2026, the 2021 year class should be a strong year class in the Rock Lake Walleye population.
