Rates come from standard DNR survey gear (gill nets, trap nets, electrofishing), judged against statewide benchmarks for the same gear, so the same number of fish per net can read differently for two species. Where the standard gear can't count a species reliably, only presence and size are listed. Typical is the middle fish of those measured. Open a row for the full length spread, survey by survey.

How to fish Big Bass (east basin) Lake through the year

Northern pike

Spring
Pike are in the shallow bays and along new weed growth.
Early summer
Pike are on the outside weed edge and points.
Summer
Pike are on the deep weed edge and points near the coolest water they can find. With 93% of this lake 15 ft or shallower, the weed edge is the main event.
Fall
Pike are on the last green weeds and the breaks beside them, feeding heavily as the water drops. A 17-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.

Walleye

Spring
Walleye are shallow, on and just off the spawning flats and the first green weeds.
Early summer
Walleye are setting up on the outside weed edge, points and shallow structure.
Summer
Walleye are working the weed edge, points and any wind-blown structure. With 93% of this lake 15 ft or shallower, the weed edge is the main event.
Fall
Walleye are packing onto the sharpest breaks and points as the water cools, in big schools with short windows. A 17-ft bowl cools fast, so the fall window comes early here.

MN DNR · in their words

From the 2024 survey

In spring 2021, a daily bag limit reduction for sunfish (5 fish/day) was implemented on Big Bass Lake as part of the statewide Quality Sunfish Initiative (QSI). The goal of this special regulation is to maintain or improve Bluegill size structure by reducing angler harvest. In order to evaluate effectiveness of the regulation, Bluegill populations on many QSI lakes are periodically assessed. Primary data of interest include size structure metrics as well as age structure and growth information. Because age and growth data were recorded recently for Big Bass in 2020, these data were not collected in 2024.

On May 20, 2024, night electrofishing was conducted on Big Bass Lake. Surface water temperatures were in the low sixties, and Bluegill was the only species collected. Areas sampled are shown in Figure 1. During 53 minutes of shocking, 258 Bluegill were captured, resulting in a catch rate of 291.9 fish/hour. Lengths ranged from 2.4 to 7.2 inches with an average size of 4.7 inches. No fish were larger than eight inches. In 2020, average length was better at 5.7 inches and fish larger than eight inches were present.
